Definition: Interpersonal communication is the process of exchanging messages between people whose lives mutually influence one another in unique ways in relation to social and cultural norms.
inter (between) + people is the quite literal definition; yet this definition acknowledges that your actions impact the person you are communicating with and vice versa.
I love discussing interpersonal communication because people tend to communicate with everyone in the same manner; and it’s not the way to do things.
For instance, a husband or wife who speaks to their spouse like they would the children or their supervisees at work, or like a person who cut them off while they were driving on the freeway! How you handle those who are close to you should be different than how you handle everyone else.
I honestly think that one thing that confuses people is this notion that everyone should be treated the same and I don’t believe that. I believe that people should be treated with respect; and treated accordingly. I want you ladies to have the confidence to communicate with people as you see fit. When something bothers you, when you feel uncomfortable, when you’re confused--you should ask questions!
I included a cool video about communication skills for you ladies to boost your confidence in communication. Let me know what you think in the comments!
